Our New Model

Small to mid-sized nonprofit organizations usually lack the access and the resources to work with consulting firms that have a proven track record to deliver the most cost-effective results.

Independent consultants who are industry specialists may add great value but frequently do not possess the breadth of experience and resources to help meet a particular challenge. The larger firms are too expensive and cannot give smaller nonprofits the attention required.

The CNPL has created a new model, the Nonprofit Leadership Consulting Group , that provides nonprofit organizations with the experience of a large consulting firm and the accessibility and affordability of an independent consultant. Because the Nonprofit Leadership Consulting Group is part of Rutgers Business School, it is in the unique position to draw upon current research and diversified resources. Its clients are guaranteed the highest quality, the most attentive service, and the infrastructure to assure a successful engagement.

The Group was also created to meet the needs of foundations who seek to support and improve leadership among their grantees.

About the Center for Nonprofit and Philantropic Leadership

The Center for Nonprofit and Philanthropic Leadership is dedicated to improving the executive leadership and governance of nonprofit and philanthropic organizations. Its purpose is to assist these leaders to fulfill their organizations’ missions by providing a common meeting ground to better define, describe and act on challenges on behalf of the sector as a whole.

The Center for Nonprofit and Philanthropic Leadership offers symposia and workshops, the Common Ground program, certificate programs in nonprofit executive leadership and philanthropic leadership, and an annual conference for executives and board members in the sector. The Center also sponsors research on issues of concern to the nonprofit and philanthropic sector. James Abruzzo and Alex Plinio are the Centers' co-founders and co-directors.

The Center for Nonprofit and Philanthropic Leadership is a part of the Institute for Ethical Leadership at Rutgers Business School – Newark and New Brunswick. The Institute reaches across sectors to promote and strengthen sustainable ethical leadership to enhance civil society.

"The Center for Nonprofit and Philanthropic Leadership offers an opportunity for the Nonprofit Executive Community to have support, the most up-to-date information, and an environment in which ideas and issues can be shared. Participating in the Certificate Program was one of the best things I’ve done as Executive Director … The material was well presented by leaders in their field, and James and Alex were wonderful in setting the tone and pace of information, and inspiring us to reach higher. I know I've reached higher as a result of this program!"

"One, I have to say that it has helped me think strategically about my organization, how I run the organization. Two, it allowed me to be much more open and direct with my board members. What the Center for Nonprofit and Philanthropic Leadership has done is allowed us to develop a bond and a trust amongst our peers … What we have found is that we are all struggling with the same problems. We have been able to help one another and that has been an important part that this Center has played with the nonprofits in this community and one that will have lasting effects."

"I think everybody in this business owes it to themselves to get involved in this. This should be a mandatory training for people in the nonprofit sector. ..There is such a crucial need in the nonprofit sector for the type of training that is available at the Center for Nonprofit and Philanthropic Leadership and the Institute for Ethical Leadership."
